Shell FCU’s “Everyone’s Gotta Eat” Food Drive Helps Stock Shelves for People and Pets Alike
June 2025, Deer Park, TX — Shell Federal Credit Union and the Furthering Community Unity (FCU) Team proudly wrapped up another successful Everyone’s Gotta Eat Food Drive this May, delivering meaningful support to local food pantries and pet shelters ahead of the high-demand summer season. By joining forces with local schools and leveraging support across Shell FCU’s 14-branch network, the Everyone’s Gotta Eat campaign continues to grow each year to meet real needs in real time for both people and pets throughout Shell FCU’s communities.
This annual initiative is strategically held each May to help replenish community food supplies before the end of the school year, when many children and families lose access to regular meal programs and increasingly rely on local food resources. Recognizing this critical need, Shell FCU’s 2025 food drive made a meaningful impact with nearly 1,400 items donated. The success of the effort was made possible through the compassion and generosity of Shell FCU members, employees, and five partnering schools: Landolt Elementary, Mae Smythe Elementary, Bailey Elementary, North Shore Elementary, and La Porte Elementary.
“Our goal each May is to provide vital resources before the summer gap begins,” said a representative of the FCU Team. “Then, as we move into August, we’re proud to circle back and support these same schools and community groups through our Supplies for Students drive, ensuring students head back to class with the tools they need to succeed.”
Donations were organized and delivered by the FCU Team to trusted nonprofit organizations, including North Channel Assistance Ministries, Pasadena Community Ministries, Bay Area Basic Needs Center, and Templo Bautista De Habla Hispana. After all—Everyone’s Gotta Eat!

Protect Credit Unions: Take Action Now
May 2025, Deer Park, TX — Shell Federal Credit Union (Shell FCU) is urging members, employees, and community supporters to take immediate action in support of preserving the credit union tax-exempt status, which is under threat by proposed legislation in Congress.
As a Low-Income Designated Credit Union, Shell FCU proudly serves over 156,000 members, with more than half considered low-income. This federal designation allows Shell FCU to provide vital financial services to individuals and families who might otherwise be left behind by traditional banking institutions.
Shell FCU’s not-for-profit model reinvests earnings into its members and the community—not Wall Street shareholders. In 2024, despite already paying over $4.8 million in taxes, Shell FCU also gave back through $50,000 in scholarships and nearly $25,000 in charitable donations, while continuing to offer low-rate loans, high-yield savings, and no or low fees.
“You chose Shell FCU because we put people before profits,” said Jose Rodriguez, President and CEO of Shell FCU. “If this legislation passes, we would be forced to raise costs or cut programs—directly hurting the people who rely on us most.”
What’s at Stake
If Congress eliminates the credit union tax exemption:
- Member costs could rise.
- Community support programs could shrink.
- Access to affordable financial services for low-income families could disappear.
- Credit unions could be forced to operate more like for-profit banks.
“A tax on credit unions is a tax on everyday Americans,” said long-time Shell FCU member Michelle G. “They helped me when no one else would.”
“Shell FCU gave me a scholarship when I needed it most. It helped me become the first in my family to graduate college,” added member Carlos R.

Jose Rodriguez Receives "The Acorn" in a Heartwarming Surprise
November 2023, Deer Park, TX — In a heartwarming and surprising gesture of gratitude and appreciation, the staff, Board of Directors, and Supervisory Committee of Shell Federal Credit Union (Shell FCU) gathered on October 25th to dedicate and present a unique gift, "The Acorn," to their fearless and servant leader, Mr. Jose Rodriguez.
For more than a year, the staff of Shell FCU secretly fundraised with unyielding determination to purchase this remarkable "Acorn" as a dedication to their beloved leader. The surprise began when the Acorn arrived, masked in a colossal box, and was carefully painted while Mr. Rodriguez was away attending a conference.
Jose Rodriguez, who has spent an impressive 30 years at Shell FCU and 15 years as its CEO, stands out as a visionary leader with an approach unlike any other financial institution CEO. He exemplifies the true essence of servant leadership, a philosophy not governed by titles, tenure, or position but driven by unwavering commitment and persistent effort on a daily basis.
Having started his career at Shell FCU as a teller, Jose has a unique journey that showcases his resilience and passion. When he joined the credit union in 1993, it served just 16,000 members and managed $81.4 million in assets. His ambitious vision and unwavering dedication have set a remarkable precedent for young professionals.
Jose's relentless drive and leadership led to his appointment as President and CEO in August 2008, and since then, Shell FCU's assets have skyrocketed to over $1.8 billion with a membership of approximately 145,000. Yet, Mr. Rodriguez is quick to share the credit for this phenomenal growth with the entire organization. He firmly believes that every member of the organization plays a crucial role, from tellers to IT, accounting to marketing, and every department in between.
Mr. Rodriguez is known for creating a positive work environment that fosters employee growth and engagement. He constantly motivates and cheers on the staff, expressing his "We Are Shell" chant through emails, speeches, and appearances.
On October 25, 2023, Jose Rodriguez was surprised with a special gift — "The Acorn" — in the newly finished employee courtyard between the existing Shell FCU Deer Park branch and the nearly completed four-story corporate office. This symbol of an acorn is significant, representing growth, fresh beginnings, and untapped potential. Just as the small and unassuming acorn holds the promise of becoming a mighty oak tree that reaches for the sky and spreads its branches far and wide, Jose's leadership has nurtured the growth of countless individuals and the entire Shell FCU community.
"The Acorn" is a small token of appreciation from the entire Shell FCU family, including the staff, Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee, and SLI Group. It signifies our profound gratitude for Jose's unwavering commitment, servant leadership, and his remarkable impact on Shell Federal Credit Union and the communities it serves.
In the words of the Shell FCU family, "We thank you, and we love you!"

FCU Team Donates 500 Garment Bags
October 2022, Deer Park, TX — Shell Federal Credit Union FCU Team donated 500 garment bags to Clothed by Faith of Katy and Deer Park. This partnership allows Clothed by Faith to assist individuals and families in receiving the items they need to live a happy and successful lives. The garment bags will be given to businesses, churches, and neighborhoods who are hosting clothing donation drives for Clothed by Faith.
Clothed by Faith is comprised of two branches, the Katy branch on Dominion and the South East Houston Branch in Deer Park. The mission of both branches is the same — to seek out those who need us the most and provide them with new or gently used clothing. Their objective is to provide at least one week's worth of clothing to anyone in need, free of charge. Gas Giveaway
Deer Park, TX — Shell Federal Credit Union changed 150 lives on Wednesday,
August 20th as they hosted their second gas giveaway. FREE GAS was pumped at the Sellers Bros
Shell gas station located at 3602 Underwood in La Porte at 7AM on Wednesday, August 20th by
Shell FCU employees. Vehicles arrived as early as 4AM to be one of the 150 vehicles to receive
$30 of FREE GAS. This FREE event was open to the public and recipients did not have to be a
member of Shell FCU.
Since the first Gas Giveaway event in October 2013 was so successful among local news and
radio stations, Shell FCU decided to increase the number of recipients for their second gas
giveaway from 100 to 150. Before the 7AM pumping began, 150 vehicles were already in line
while numerous local news stations were airing live. Plus, local radio station 94.5 The Buzz
was on site passing out free items and providing live updates on air.
Through onsite media coverage and the power of social media, the FREE GAS GIVEAWAY event
spread like wildfire and had an incredible turnout. The event had over 1000 social media
mentions from various media outlets and individual shares. Shell FCU also encouraged the
free gas recipients to take a 'selfie' while waiting for their free gas using the hastag
#shellfie. Several recipients even snapped a 'shellfie' with the Shell FCU employee that
pumped their gas.
When Shell FCU was asked why they were paying it forward the answer was simple. Shell FCU is
‘Changing Lives’ every day through community involvement, interest rate reduction and
financial literacy. With positive support, Shell FCU helps individuals pay off debt and
start saving.

The FCU Team partners with local elementary schools for this annual event. Students are given
a lunch sack to decorate with their family and return to their school with a food drive
donation. Assisting with the food drive not only helps others, but teaches the students
social responsibility. The FCU Team works with eight elementary schools and donates to 15
food pantries and animal shelters.
The FCU Team powered by Shell FCU was created to provide opportunities for giving back in our
communities and teaching the value of social responsibility in a fun team setting. To learn

2013 Volunteers of the Year
Deer Park, TX — People helping people is an important philosophy at Shell
Federal Credit Union. From that belief a group of Shell FCU employees created a volunteer
outreach program named the Furthering Community Unity (FCU) Team more than 5 years ago. The FCU
Team started its first year with 145 volunteers who donated over 340 hours back to their
communities. To date at least 1500 volunteers have raised and donated more than $75,000 and 7000
hours in the name of the FCU Team.
In 2013, two individuals stood out among the crowd of volunteers to become the FCU Team’s
Volunteers of the Year. Jessica Nicholas, an employee at Shell FCU, donated 20 hours of her
personal time with the FCU Team. These admirable actions have allowed her to become the FCU
Team’s Employee Volunteer of the Year for 2013.
Luisa Herrera, a member volunteer, attended five different events and donated 10 hours of her
personal time to be named the Member Volunteer of the Year. Luisa is the youngest member
thus far to receive this prestigious honor. She is a perfect example of the dedication that
the FCU Team strives to instill in each young volunteer.
The FCU Team awarded Mrs. Nicholas & Ms. Herrera with a unique ‘Volunteer of the Year’ jacket
to show their gratitude for their hard work and dedication. The FCU Team powered by Shell
FCU was created to provide opportunities for giving back in our communities and teaching the
value of social responsibility in a fun team setting. To learn more about the FCU Team

2014 Membership Certificate
Deer Park, TX — Shell Federal Credit Union has supported the credit union
philosophy of people helping people for 77 years. Through interest rate reduction, a loyal and
steadfast commitment to their communities and positive support Shell FCU has improved the lives
of thousands. Service excellence, community outreach and lasting financial solutions for all
stages in life are just a few of the rare characteristics SFCU posses compared to other
financial institutions.
Credit unions exist to serve their members and communities. As not-for-profit cooperatives,
credit unions use excess earnings to offer members more affordable loans, a higher return on
savings, lower fees or new products and services. They serve members from all walks of life,
including the underserved and financially distressed.
Members are also the owners and elect a volunteer credit union board of directors based on a
one member, one vote principle, regardless of how much he or she has on deposit. Volunteers
are an important credit union resource. Presently, more than 100,000 Americans volunteer for
their credit unions, serving as board members, committee members or providing other
assistance.
As financial intermediaries, credit unions finance their loan portfolios by mobilizing member
savings and shares, rather than using outside capital; thus, providing opportunities for
generations of members. Because credit unions have no outside stockholders, after reserves
are set aside, earnings are returned to members in the form of dividends on savings, lower
loan rates and additional services.
Credit unions have operated their own federal deposit insurance fund on a pay- as-you-go
basis since 1984. In that year, credit unions voluntarily deposited 1.0 percent of their
insured member savings in National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), to bring its
equity ratio up to 1.0 percent. This recapitalization resulted in a one-time reduction in
the federal deficit.
While the NCUSIF is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, the structure
of the insurance fund ensures that only if all of the capital in the credit union movement
were exhausted, would any taxpayer funds be spent on credit unions. Like other deposit
insurance funds, NCUSIF protects members' savings up to at least $100,000 and individual
retirement accounts (IRAs) and Keoghs up to $250,000. No member has ever lost a penny of
federally insured funds held in a credit union. The voluntary recapitalization of NCUSIF
before problems occurred, and the mechanisms in place to keep the fund highly capitalized,
illustrate credit unions' commitment to safety and soundness.
In today’s turbulent world, extending a helping hand to our communities is a top priority at
Shell Federal Credit Union. Our programs deliver products and services that are unique and
comprehensive in financial education, as well as provide an avenue for volunteerism. Anyone
who lives, works, worships or attends school in Harris County is eligible to bank with Shell
FCU. For details about Shell FCU visit www.shellfcu.org or stop by any of their 8 branch locations.
As a member of the Cornerstone Credit Union League, Shell FCU enriches the benefits
of the membership through advocacy in the federal and state level, resources, staff
training,
outreach programs, regulatory and compliance support, research data and more.
